IBIA and GLMS Report an Increase in Suspicious Betting Patterns

IBIA and GLMS report on increase in suspicious betting patterns

Last updated on January 7th, 2022

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and the Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) report a year-on-year increase in suspicious betting patterns. For the IBIA, there has been a 48% increase in suspicious betting patterns from 2019 to 2020. In football alone, it was a 25% increase. On the other hand, GLMS reports an increase in their alerts. Football is also leading at 74.75%.

The IBIA has found that there has been a considerable increase in suspicious betting patterns. In total, 270 cases were reported, and this spans 43 countries and 15 different sports. Also, 68 of such cases occurred in the first quarter. If you compare it to 2019’s statistics, which is 183 reports, this is a significant increase.

According to the CEO of IBIA, Khalid Ali, “2020 was a turbulent year for many sectors, including the betting industry, which had to adjust its market offering due to the global sports lockdown.

“As a result, IBIA focused its integrity monitoring activity to take account of new sports tournaments and competitions that emerged.”

He also added: “The association is seeking to work with stakeholders to address any potential integrity issues that may be associated with these new events through a range of actions, including promoting a set of standards for the collation of sports data for betting.

“Whilst there was an increase in overall alerts from 2019 to 2020, it should be noted that the 2020 cases are consistent with the number of alerts reported in both 2017 and 2018.”

The best online betting sites are taking this information into account as they provide offers that are legal and favourable to their bettors. In addition to that, 59% of the alerts comprises tennis and football. Tennis had the largest number of alerts at 98, while football had 61 alerts.

The GLMS aims to detect and analyse suspicious betting patterns and activities that “could question the integrity of a sports competition.” Last year, it reported a total of 1,113 alerts, 832 of which belong to football. It also reported 126 matches to its partners.

FIFA, UEFA and other local gaming authorities received these alerts. The data was taken from the recent “2020 Annual Monitoring & Intelligence Report.”

Aside from football, you also have basketball with 135 alerts or 12.13%. There’s also ice hockey with 55 alerts or 4.94%. These statistics show the continued rise of suspicious betting patterns in many sports. However, several organisations are also doing their best to provide a safe and legal sports betting environment.
